Hulbert Footner Revival

A century ago, Hulbert Footner was a writing machine — when not tearing around the mud tracks of southern Maryland in his Buick or paddling the Patuxent River near Solomons, where the Canadian-born, internationally acclaimed author settled.

In a stunningly prolific career, Footner wrote more than 60 books, primarily in the adventure and detective fiction genres. He was also turning out magazine articles and writing serially for newspapers when editors had the sense to print fiction. Late in life, Footner produced deeply researched and thoroughly readable histories of southern Maryland's people and its waters.

One of those books, Rivers of the Eastern Shore, a compelling account of the early history and culture of a storied land, was recently re-released by Schiffer Books and is available at the Calvert County Historical Society.

The Society opened a Hulbert Footner Room at Linden, its nearly 200 year-old, Italianate headquarters, on Church Street in Prince Frederick.Visitors can absorb Footner’s history in a setting complete with writing desk, his typewriter, and memorabilia donated by his grandchildren. Hulbert Footner books can be bought, too. Read New Bay Books coverage.

Rains disappeared and crowds turned out at Key School in Annapolis to meet some three dozen national and regional authors. Kathy Bergren Smith, above left (Deadly Gamble), told the shocking true tale of the Chesapeake's worst sailing disaster.

Jim Toomey (A Family Afloat), pictured above with sailing aficionado Jib Edwards, reminded his deck-shoed audience that yes, you can indeed drop everything and sail for two years in the Mediterranean and Caribbean, which he writes about. Kathy Best pictured above with her sous chef, New Bay Books partner Bill Lambrecht, not only taught her audience to cook Shrimp & Grits but served heaping bowls of it. The recipe comes from Soups, Stews & Stories: An Investigative Reporter's Quest to Nourish the Soul, co-authored with her late husband, Andy Schneider.

Andrew Schneider gathered recipes from exotic and everyday places in bringing back his Pulitzer Prize-winning stories. His wife and co-author, Kathleen Best, read excerpts at a Book Release party at National Park Seminary in Silver Spring, Md. Read about it on our blog or just buy the book and your roux will be rich and your sauces the talk of your 'hood.

A Little About Us

What’s a writer without a reader but a voice calling out in the wilderness?

What’s a reader without a writer?

There is no such thing. Uniting writers and readers over good stories (poems, too) is the mission of New Bay Books, a new publishing house for Chesapeake Country. To that mission, my New Bay Books partner (and husband) William Lambrecht and I bring more than a quarter century of experience.

The mission inspired us to join with son Alex Knoll to create New Bay Times newspaper back in 1993 and to sustain a journalism enterprise for twenty-seven buffeting years. New Bay Times continues as Bay Weekly, now under the ownership of Chesapeake Bay Media. The mission — finding, developing, editing, publishing and distributing good stories for good reading — continues with New Bay Books.

What does our mission mean for you?

To readers, New Bay Books brings good books …

To writers, New Bay Books brings opportunity ...
